T-Bone is the country warrior of Zeta Force. He plays somewhat unorthodox, shotguns instead of rifles, v-neck's instead of traditional Zeta garb. This is one of Jorge's first drawings, I told him to watch the movie "Joe Dirt" so he could understand a little bit what T-Bone was like in character. He liked the movie. Go Joe Dirt!

This is one of my favorite vehicles in Rex Derek's arsenal. Great for his troops to get across land and into action. Heavily armored equipment. We see Jorge's version of the Trank compared to early drawings by Bert. I love Jorge's direction, but I spent so much time on the original Trank drawings, getting it perfect, that I want to add very little to it. I think Jorge is has made some nice artistic changes, but I will put the two drawings here so that both can be viewed side by side. Bert is more realistic, Jorge is an illustrator. Please, anyone, make commentary. Thanks.

He and I have taken a hiatus while he moved to Mexico City, Mexico and settled into a larger area where he could do more of his art. As you can see, he still is the very talented artist I came to know and fall in love with. This is the Trank, half train (very powerful), and half tank. Our heroes will use these vehicles to transport to the enemy and take out the rocket that is aimed at earth.

Anyhow, I have a great amount of gratitude for Mary. I bore witness to her artistic spirit and saw her tremendous talent when invited to her home for dinner one evening. She inspired me when she said, Joe, what is keeping you from building that puppet? Do you have emotional pain? This is what you should be doing. It is what you were put here to do.

I took her words, my mother's and my father's and began sculpting Rex Derek. I'll show you a picture in the next day. It is coming right along. The sculpt is just about complete.

Jorge is trying to get the Bazooka Joe character right. Here is my email to Jorge describing Bazooka Joe. It is kind of fun interacting with an artist you have never spoken to, but have only communicated with over the internet. It is completely cereberal.

..."Take a deep breath, relax that drawing hand, and come at this fresh and new. Grab a cup of Cafe Bustelo, or whatever good South American coffee you may drink, and drink one hot and fresh and mix in your sugar. You probably have a couple of ants crawling around in the sugar, from what I remember, but don't let them bother you. They give your drawing hand the strength and power you need to create this complex character. He's not someone you see in your part of the world. From the neck down, you've got him. Print a picture of the drawing Bert did and put that drawing above the computer on the wall. Or, above your drawing area on the wall with a piece of scotch tape.

Think of your days in Chicago, in America, and the black men you saw there. Comprende? This is where you have to test your artistic merits. A-rod is only a person Joe is similar to. I did tell you to draw him exactly like A-rod, but do not. Draw him exactly as Jorge sees him as an overly, self-confident male. I know there was a guy like him in personality when you were in junior school. He was always poking fun at people, he was handsome, he wasn't hurtful to a guy like you, in fact, he probably liked you because you were the artist. He probably asked you for a drawing of himself. He probably looked at you at your school's prom and you saw him when he walked into the school auditorium. He was wearing an overly tacky outfit, with way too many gold neclaces on. He probably had a gold tooth, that he thought was "hot".

That bad-ass hombre was with a girl that everyone in your school thought was the hottest girl around.He starts trashing his soccer buddies, and then he looks across the room at you and gives you a wink, letting you know that you are cool in his book. You don't talk to him again the whole evening. But, bottom line, Joe is cool, everyone knows he's cool, and we have got to feel that character."

Jorge lives in Mexico, and this character has been a tough one to get his mind around. These sketches are beautiful. I think he has it.

People who may be reading this blog may not realize that this project is a work of scripts, thirty minute tv shows, with foam-rubber characters as the central actors. All sets are built by me and my crew. It is a science-fiction, comedic adventure. In all programs, the central theme is some evil force trying to destroy our planet- planet Earth. These guys are part of a special group of men called Zeta force. They are comprised of Sergio Leone type tough guys with a dark sense of humor. They continually work to destroy enemies of Earth.

Puppets on film, who wouldn't love it? I'll post my original short film in the not too distant future. Any commentary, please leave it with me via chat. Thanks, and enjoy my special world.

Rex Derek pulls a set of goggles close to his face. Magpie is busy at the controls- pulling handles and turning knobs, steam emitting from time to time.

REX: STEADY AS SHE GOES.

Magpie: As steady as I can keep her, Captain. Must we always be sent to the nastiest planets in the universe? A planet where fire perpetually erupts from the land? Really, Captain!

Rex: Red, what is the topography like from where you are sitting?

Red: From what I can tell, it looks just like Magpie put it, rocky and the land is wrought with fire-geysers. Temperatures are above one hundred in the daylight… nighttime temperatures- somewhere in the teens. It looks to be overcast at nearly all times.

CHET CARTRIGHT
Soldiers let me remind each of you that I will remain in a superior role during the entirety of this mission. Captain Derek is no longer in charge of this mission.

(annoyed) Cartright, please…

We are part of the elite Zeta Force. We technically go by all of the rules and regulations of normal personnel. However, we don't quite fit into the same clean box that you are more accustomed to and that which you are portraying. I respect your position, but if I need to, I can usurp your authority with one telephone call. And, I won’t hesitate to make that call if I feel you are putting my crew in danger.

Jorge and I have been working hard to nail concepts down and this is not easy. At times, I'm sure he'd like to ring my neck. He's been great in his understanding and being the true artist he is. Everybody looking at this needs to see what a great comic-book artist Jorge F. Munoz is. He's got wonderful work, and he is a pioneer as one of the first comic-book artists to do a book in a completely digital format...I believe his comicbook is called, Bear Beater Bunyan. Give it a look, it is good stuff.

I'm going to put posts on here that represent what Jorge Munoz and I have been working on. We've got the workings of a really good storyboard. Each image is painstakingly done. Mostly for Jorge Munoz, the talented Mexican artist. I'll try to mostly put these in order, the different illustrations, but they are telling a story of a group of guys in an elite force of men who protect the world and its space from all kinds of dastardly enemies- ones from other planets, ones from space, and ones who come from the ocean. All, generally want to do harm to good people.

Enjoy Jorge Munoz's great work. I am but a story-teller. He is an illustrator with great talents, as you will now see.

I am happy that I have found a new artist to start story-boarding my first few scripts. We are hashing out characters. I'll post new ones as they come about. Jorge and I have never met one and other, we have communicated only by email. It is amazing, but technology has made it available for us to work this way. He is adapting my characters completed by the earlier artist, but using something closer to his style.

Jorge had some very neat work and I felt he might be the person to handle the project. It was a gamble, but I feel one that can only come on top with a person such as he.

Dude is a pretty amazing individual, here he is in flight! I recently spoke to Bert about Dude's history. Here it is-

Dude is a bio-product of a future time, the 2400's. When a human's body fails through personal injury or illness, and when the brain remains intact, bio-engineers have the ability to encase the brain in a glass container filled with a preserving liquid. The brain maintains all of its previous senses and functions; however, the mechanical body is a very sophisticated machine which still operates mechanically in lieu of the human body. It mostly operates with normal motor functions, but lacks the ability to really touch and feel.

Dude was considered an excellent marksman in the military, before his terrible near-death. He had been quite proficient and skilled with a Colt pistol. He had almost been murdered near the end of The War of 2455, when an entire platoon of his men were caught by enemy troops in a Slavik country where they had been maintaining peace. He and his men were made to lay across a roadway face-down, then they were individually shot until each of them were killed. Nobody lived, except Dude. He lay face down for two days, until peaceful forces scared the enemy away and were able to get to him.

His brain and his other vital organs held onto life, just barely. He was rescued after he was found by American forces to a newer branch of the army medical services called the Special Brain Ops, or nicknamed the "Dead Man Walking Unit".

Dude is one of tens of thousand of these revived soldiers. The lives of these soldiers is much longer than that of normal human beings, for their bodies are no longer flesh, but metal. The only part of the individual which remains organic, is the brain. The body is trashed and the mechanical body becomes the house of the individual.

The glass dome which preserves his brain is super thick, but it can be harmed, and if penetrated, almost always proves to be deadly. Glass is generally used instead of metal, which can rust, or hard plastic, which becomes ruined by plastic toxins, or BPA's, over time.

Bert is working hard to make my vision of Dude precise. I am a punishing in my preciseness. I spent three years of my life bringing Dude to my audience, I want him to be EXACT. Here are some really nice illustrations that Bert did. He is very close to my vision. In fact, I love each of the drawings, but my character is so, so specific. Anyhow, it should be fun for anyone watching to see what he pulls out of his hat of tricks each time.

Some cloths Cash might be wearing. Hope I got the build right. The BDUs are what you'd normally see solders walking around in around base. The annoying thing about BDUs is that they are designed to hide the build of the body so really all I got to draw was a bunch of folds in cloth still he looks much more professional in the BDUs. Just got to move on to Red now and get him in an out fit.

Wall Crawler 2

So here is the more fleshed out wall crawler. It has come back to a more proportional form and it is wearing a mirrored suit of armor. In this version the armor has become less of a specialized "pouch" and more of a shell that hides the creature's true nature. It is also not a robot anymore, a layer of black material lines the joints and keeps the various unsightly appendages unseen until it is too late. I tried to keep the creature from looking cartoony though I did need some pretty heavy lines to delineate the metal plates and make sure that all the forms are recognizable .

Shorty and the Beast

So here's a quick sketch of Shorty taking on a wounded wall crawler.He's got some pretty ordinary clothes on but I think if they were fleshed out it would have just made the image more confusing. the beast didn't get much space in this one but Shorty does look like an action hero, which is cool. I only wish I put a bandanna around Shorty's neck.

So this is a villainous goon introduced in the story early on. It is supposed to have a vague human shape and also lean backwards and crab/spider walk around. I wanted it too look really awkward while it stands up and pretends to look like a man and the oddly shaped arms and legs will give much more ability to move around on all fours. Anyway, the idea I'm working with is that this creature is actually a sedentary parasite that incubates in a host's belly gathering food and strength from its unwilling benefactor. Then at some point the parasite emerges from the host (probably dead or stricken with illness at this point) and uses its tentacles to infect any living thing around it with it's off-spring. The bad guys probably created a mechanical/organic body for a trained creatures and then use them as assassins and shock troopers. I'll have some more drawings of this thing soon and hopefully a shoot out sketch with shorty in it by the end of the day.

I am clay in your hands Joe- after the Big Red description I learned that you know exactly what you want and that actually gives me a crazy drive for creation, experiencing your vision pushes my work places it has never gone before. Thank you for the extra description. I'll ease back on the pretty boy effect. I was working from a base of innocence shattered and less of a hard core beaten by an deranged father feel like the first on I did.

"Cash...you are on it! You surprised me...well, not really, but this is a lot like the Cash I have invested so much time into. I need to see him in some regular clothing for him. Also, I definitely think you have the face down. The hair is really clean-cut, maybe just dirty it up a very tiny bit. I like the eyes. I would say to give him a little more gray in the hair. Maybe, bushier eyebrows. Face structure is perfect. I like the way the eyes have an intensity about them. You might try to sink the eyes in just a tiny bit- he doesn't sleep a lot, he's always watching his back. Overall, I have got to say he is just about perfect. He's a little bit pretty-boy, but that is okay, I asked you for that. Just darken his features just the lightest bit and don't forget to give him a little more gray in the hair going back from his face and over the ear. Throw a military jacket on him, and I think we are just about there.

Here is another Cash. I hit it with some more realism and turned off the heavy metal to get a little more empathy in this one. Hope this is a little more of what you're looking for Joe. I wanted to try and get a guy who has won we had too yet survived when he didn't, albeit with a little emotional scarring. -Bert

Didn't get much work yesterday I've been bombing on these Silverlake drawings and I've got to move on. I think Silverlake might be a problematic character It's easier for me to draw a character when I have a firm grip on their personality and Silverlake is a little more complex than I expected... Anyway I'm gonna hit up Cash again and see if I can get some personality out of the next few sketches and then I'll plan out an action sequence with shorty taken out a wall crawling, tentacled, bike riding creep. Soon.

I love Shorty with the Confederate cap, nice touch! This is kind of the way I saw him. The guys drink Smug-Wug's, not beer. I really love your interpretations, though. How about one with Shorty making short work of a wall crawler? Just a quick sketch? Try to lean more towards the sepia tones in the sketches, just for continuity's sake. Regarding this study- Great job, you have got a good handle on the material, this is much more professional than the first Cash heads.

We've got New York and California eyes coming to take a visit, let's make sure those tweebs can wrap their minds around southern sci-fi! Let's rock their world.

I welcome the Miss Lake drawings, but it will be necessary to take another whack at Cash, a.k.a. "Mr. Moneybags"... remember, "they don't call him Cash for nothing!"

I'm going to start on some face studies for Ms. Silverlake after I get back from a quick trip to Target. I'm thinking about giving her a Indian Bharatanatyam Dancer feel. Big Red is born!!!

My dear artist friend Bert has concisely brought to life one of the more interesting characters I have created for my storyline about a group of mercenaries hired to save the world.

My tale begins many years into the future with two character's- Cash and Big Red. Both are mercenaries, guns for hire, who are hired by our government. This is probably the most important job either one of them has ever been commissioned to work on. They will travel overseas to battle the lecherous Karl Kruelter and one of the most sinister armies to walk the face of the earth- an army of super-powered robots! It will be a job working to overturn Kruelter's evil regime overseas, one which closely resembles the forces at work in Germany during WWII.

Bert will make sure that the world is safe from villainy and that characters like Big Red and Cash are there to save the day.

I'll post the first set of Big Red sketches at some point (actually I'm probably going to cannibalize them to add some depth to some random characters) although I was way out of the ball park in terms of style and personality. Rest assured they will be posted at some point perhaps not in their original incarnation. -Bert
